3rd CESTL Story: A Powerful Learning Experience

A Powerful Learning Experience—The 3rd CESTL Story

Curriculum & Instruction
School of Education
University of Texas at Brownsville

Introduction

On June 27, 2008, another CESTL (Conference of Elementary Secondary Teaching & Learning) took place in the educational building of the School of Education at the University of Texas at Brownsville. A total of 38 undergraduate students presented their research. At least 30 people from outside (mainly the student presenters’ parents, spouses, siblings, children) attended this conference as well.

CESTL was organized by instructor Dr. Dengting Boyanton and all of her students currently taking her courses EDCI 4322 Human Development & Instruction and EDSC 4322 Human Development & Instruction in the School of Education at the University of Texas at Brownsville (UTB/TSC).

The 3rd CESTL showed research conducted by all of our student researchers during the summer session, who spent this whole semester investigating one research topic of their interest under Dr. Boyanton’s guidance and supervision. Specific research method used was self-study, through which our students explored their own growing up experiences and stories as a learner.

This conference covered a wide range of topics related to classroom teaching and learning including learning and motivation, learning environment, learning process, learning conditions, peer relationship and learning, parenting and learning, teacher characteristics and learning, learning disability, race and learning, as well as culture and learning

A Powerful Learning Experience

Like the previous CESTL, the third conference was once again extremely successful. Although this conference lasted for almost eight and half hours (from 1:00pm to 9:30pm), which most of the students did not think they could sit there for such a long period of time and still enjoy it, all students reported that they actually enjoyed the whole conference. Not only did they enjoyed every single presentation, they also enjoyed “every single minute.”

The 3rd CESTL has received overwhelmingly positive feedback from the student presenters as well as some of the parents, who described this experience as “great,” “exciting,” “inspiring,” “motivating,” “entertaining,” “emotional,” “touching,” “powerful” “amazing” “respectful” “stimulating,” “interesting,” “incredible,” and “informative.” The list goes forever…

Heathcliff shared his experience that when he first heard that they were going to have to present at a conference for eight and half hours, he wasn’t too excited. He said, “I was not exactly looking forward to being there for a long time. Yet, despite this predisposition, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. There was not a single person who went up there who I didn’t enjoy their presentation.”

Ruben also said expressed his concern that “I was a bit worried about being contained in one room, forced to listen to 40 (or so) other people’s stories.” But he found himself “was pleasantly proven wrong.” “It was such a great experience to consider the motives of other future educators. Some of the colleagues’ presentations were very emotionally stirring. Their experiences truly had an effect on them, and they were passionate about their work. I’m really grateful Dr. Dengting brought that out in all of us.” “The CESTL was a great experience!” He said.

Tania shared similar feelings, “At the beginning I thought eight hours was going to be a long time, but once we were there, time flew fast.”
Erika also said that “I have to admit I did not like the idea of having to spend so many hours in the conference, but once the conference got started and I started to listen and learn from everyone’s stories and experiences, I lost the track of time. Time went by so fast, and I enjoyed every minute of the CESTL.”

The 3rd CESTL was also a unique conference in the way that most student presenters conducted their research through self-study, which was to reflect their own growing-up experience as a learner. This special format of research method made many students very emotional and sentimental during their presentations. Many students said that they felt like crying or actually cried many times during the conference. Dr. Boyanton herself broke into tears during her own presentation. She was also deeply touched by many of her students’ presentations and cried many times. “It was really hard for me to listen to my students’ stories and know how much they have been through and how hard they had tried to just be where they are today. Their strength, will-power, resilience, and hard work really touched my heart!” Dr. Boyanton said.

Student Rosalinda, a fifty-year-old lady, gave her presentation with tears on her fact almost during the whole presentation. Rosalinda had always wanted to attend school since she was a child, but her dream of attending school were denied many times because of her family were unable to afford the tuition. Rosalinda couldn’t help crying when she recalled how all the hardships in her life kept her from attending college.

Anais, another presenter started her presentation with a sweet smile, but broke into tears in the end when she was stating how her parents had influenced her as a person in Spanish to her parents, who were sitting right in the very front. Her parents sure looked very touched and also proud to be there.

Noelia, another strong woman whose presentation touched the whole room, cried almost during her entire presentation, when she recalled how much hardships her parents had been through and how her college dreams had been delayed again and again due to all kinds of challenges and obstacles! She felt really blessed to have the opportunity to study at UTB today.

Margarita, another strong woman who had to hold her head up very high so that tears would not falling down her face, had also touched many of the audiences when she shared her growing-up experiences and how her parents affected her parenting style today.

Many parents and family members were also touched by the students’ presentation and cried as well. Michelle noticed that her father was crying during presentation. She said “My dad is really big on family and gets really sentimental when he hears us tell them that we appreciate them for everything they have done. As soon as I started my presentation, he was crying, so soon after I couldn’t hold it.”

There were also many laughters in the CESTL. For example, Vanessa Lope's presentation on how age had affected her learning definitely lightened up the spirit of the room. The funniest presentation would be Eleazar, who was determined to make make people laugh during his presentation. Well, he sure succeeded in doing that. People were very amused and entertained by his presentation during the whole time. However, although he intended to make his presentation funny, his deep love for his mother was obvious and still touched many of the audience!

What have the students learned?

The students reported that they have learned a lot out of this CESTL experience. Some students learned that public speaking is not as fearful or scary as they originally thought was. They learned that the main thing was to push themselves and give it a try first before they told themselves “no.” As a result, many students started to feel much more confident and comfortable about public speaking in the future. For example, Patricia mentioned that presenting at the CESTL helped her overcome her fear of public speaking and she said,

“I personally had never been involved in something like this; it made me feel as if I can accomplish anything now. I had always been terrified of public speaking, but after last night, I always have to remind myself that I did it once, I can do it again. I was pretty satisfied with my presentation because like I said I was always shy and afraid of public speaking.”

Frank said that “What I learned about myself was mostly that I am going to get more comfortable in public speaking, which is very important for me since I’m going to be an art teacher.” Erika also said that “After I was done with my speech, I felt proud of myself for getting through it. I definitely learned to get over one of my biggest fears: public speaking.”

Monique, another student who was scared of public speaking, said that: “It was a big learning experience for me. After talking in front so many people, I feel that now I am able to do any presentation. I will probably still be nervous, but at least I know now that I am capable of doing it.”

The most important thing is that the students learned about each others’ struggles and passion to teach, and they felt very inspired and motivated to teach and learn after hearing each other’s stories.

“I feel I have learned a lot from this experience. First of all, I have learned that there are amazing teachers out there who will go to the limit to help their students feel comfortable and important. I think we all have Dr. Boyanton to thank for everything. I also learned a lot from my peers. They shared stories in the CESTL that will stick with me forever. I learned good ways to be and affective teacher and bad ways.” Said Patricia.

“I learned a lot from this experience; it was great to see other people’s perspective on education and their points of view on what they think can affect a student. I though it was great and I learned a lot from everyone.” Said Kesia.

Rosalinda also said that she learned a lot from the CESTL experience, “The experience with the CESTL was wonderful, I learned a lot not only from all the participants but from myself. I never thought that I could stand in front of a big group and talk about my life. It was very emotional, but even with that I could do it. I am glad that I decided to take this class and specially with you Dr. Boyanton, I learned a lot from you as a caring person, an excellent teacher, and a professional professor. It is an honor to have teachers like you in our university.”

Crespin also said that he was really moved by some of the presentations and it made him realize that he wasn’t the only one who struggled to get to where he is today. “Some of the presentations made me sad, and I realized that some students lived a harder life than I did and still found a way to keep learning and did well in school. It was really interesting to hear my classmate’s personal struggles and I have a new respect for all of them. I don’t think I will ever forget any of them and I hope they won’t forget me, either.” Said Crespin.

Michelle said that she enjoyed learning about each presenter as a person, which she thinks is very important, “You learn about how there are different lifestyles and backgrounds to everyone. We need to learn how to adapt to them and not judge them by a simple statistic or by how we think they are. We should take our time to meet with everyone individually and find that inner personality they have.”

Cristina shared similar feelings and said that “I can honestly say that I have known most of my classmates in a deeper perspective and hopefully made new friends. I hope all of my classmates and Dr. Boyanton as well have every dream fulfilled and that they can achieve them with positive outcomes.”

Monique learned that family support is a very important factor in one’s success, “I also liked this conference because it gave us a chance to learn a lot about everybody’s life, and it allowed me to see how important family is to most of us. Family support is very important and that is the reason most of us are in college today. We all want to make our families proud.”

Margarita expressed that she learned how to be a strong person, and how one should not to let the past obstacles affect their future lives and happiness. She said,

“I am glad I got the courage to come out in the open and talk. I wanted everyone to see that regardless of how we grew up, we could make changes of our own. That I learned from my past to stay strong and keep going. I am really glad I got the chance to share my story. Thank You, Dr. Boyanton for believing in each one of us to be able to go up there and speak. I will always look back at this conferent as an incredible learning experience for me as an educator and as a parent.”

Karina learned the importance of parenting in our life, “The CESTL made me realize that other people have many problems as well as me. I learned that parenting is a big influence in their children. I got to learn about other people's lives, the way they grew and I got ideas about how to raise my children in the future. I learned about what things to do and not to do to help my own children and also future students.”

How did the students feel about their presentation?

Needless to day, almost all of them felt extremely nervous at the beginning and not sure if they could do it or not. Cristina’s experience can be a good representative of most students’ experiences,

“I was so nervous that I felt like crying as soon as I stepped in the room. Once I saw our classmates it made me feel even more uneasy because they were all dressed up professionally. I thought that with our wardrobe we actually already looked like teachers which made me feel anxious. I started seeing everyone go up to the front and present. All of them were doing so well that it made me feel as if I was going to do horrible. As soon as I had to sit on the chair to wait for my turn, I started shaking all over. I couldn’t control my legs and my hands.”

Crespin shared similar feelings when he first arrived at the conference,

“As I was driving to the education building for our CESTL conference I started to feel very nervous and started sweating. As I walked into the room, I saw many of familiar faces that made me feel a little more comfortable. I had attended the other EDCI classroom about two weeks earlier which gave me the opportunity to meet some of those students who were at the conference. After being there for a couple minutes, I said to myself, “This is no big deal. I can do this,” and I started feeling better and more confident. I started to realize that everyone was just as nervous as I was and that helped me.”

However, once the presentation started, most students found themselves actually calmed down and able to concentrate on their presentation. For example, Cristina said that she actually felt so confident there presenting that she almost felt awkward, and she never had this kind of confident feeling before.

“Well, I actually didn’t even feel as myself up there, I had this confidence that I actually never have, it was interesting to feel it. I remember getting some questions from others and answering them… But as soon as I sat down I didn’t even remember what I had answered or said. I doubted myself and thought, 'Did I actually just do that?' I did it! I was relieved and I felt so hot afterwards.” Said Cristina.

In general, almost all students felt very pleased with their presentation. Kesia said that she felt very pleased with her performance, she felt the sense of proud, as well as the sense of achievement.

“I am so happy that we finally did the CESTL. I was very nervous at first, but after seeing everybody go up, and I felt very proud of everyone, and I felt that I worried too much because it was not that hard, it was very challenging but I feel it was another accomplished goal. I feel very satisfied with my performance, I talked about my research and I felt very familiar with everyone, I did not feel nervous once I was there in front of everyone and for that I feel very satisfied and proud of myself.” Said Kesia.

Ruben said that “I was fairly satisfied with my performance. I think my explanations and PowerPoint flowed nicely.” Frank, a student who shared his passion about art at the CESTL, also felt pleased with his presentation, “I thought my presentation went very well. I received several questions, which I thought I was not going to get.”

Many students felt proud after their presentations. Monique, who was extremely nervous about presenting at the CESTL and felt very unsure if she could do it or not, felt very proud of her own performance afterwards, and she said,

“I have to say that I am very proud of my performance and everybody else’s. I really believe that we all did such a great job. I couldn’t believe that I did it! I can actually say that I am very proud of my performance. I am usually not satisfied with my performances but this time I was. When I first had to do it in class, I hated the way it turned out because I felt that I had skipped so many things and I wasn’t able to get my points across, but when I did it at the conference, I felt that I was able to make my points and tell my complete story.”

Nidia, another student who had fear of public speaking, also felt proud afterwards, “I think that I did a good job and I feel proud of myself.”

Rosalinda, who broke into tears during her presentation, said that although she was not very satisfied with her presentation because she could not control her tears (although she actually did a great job), she was very proud that she did it. “About my performance I can not said that I was satisfied, I was emotional and nervous. But I am proud that even with that I did it!!!!!!!!!”

Some students also felt more prepared about future teaching career. As Jerome said “Everyone did a terrific job presenting last night. I am glad that we got to have that experience. It is just another way in which you (Dr. Boyanton) have helped to prepared us—your students, for what challenges we may face as educators.”

Many students also felt motivated after this experience, and started to thinking about obtaining masters and Ph.D.s after receiving the bachelor’s degree. “I know that many of my classmates/friends will go on to obtain their master degrees as well as be fantastic teachers wherever they teach. Some will get their PHD’s and hopefully do positive things for the future of students in this or any country abroad if they chose too.” Said Jerome.

Overall Evaluation of CESTL

Over all, the students were very satisfied with their own performances at the CESTL, and their impression of the CESTL was very positive.

Heathcliff said,
“I’m glad that I had the experience of attending and presenting at CESTL. The stories I heard were touching and emotional. Some were funny and humorous. Overall, regardless of how much I wasn’t looking forward to it initially, I definitely would like to do something like this again and I, without doubt, am glad that I took this course with Dr. Dengting and had the opportunity to share my life experiences and learn from the lives of my peers.”

Erika said
“I would not change any thing about the castle conference. Every thing was well planned and organized and everybody looked so professional. It was a great practice and introduction for what the future has in store for us as future educators. I thank Dr. Boyanton for bringing the best out of us and for showing us what we are capable of.”

Patricial said,
“I am speechless when it comes to last night’s CESTL conference. Everyone was so supportive and everyone I feel did an amazing job presenting. The environment was a lot more comfortable that I had expected being with another class that we did not know too well. I ended up knowing a few other people from the class and they were all respectful and supportive to all of us.”

Nidia said,
“I really learned that no matter what obstacles you confront in your way, always continue to be optimistic and motivated to succeed throughout life. I really think that everything came out so perfect that I don’t think there’s any suggestion to improve in future CESTL Presentations.”

Sandra said,
“Wow! I was really amazed about everybody’s presentation, it was really emotional and touching, I learned a lot from everyone. This was my first experience ever in giving a story of my life to strangers. But you know it was worth it, after a while I felt that all those people, I knew them from a long time. I am really glad that Dr. Boyanton made us participate on this presentation.”

Karina said,
“I really enjoyed the red ribbon dance!! It was amazing to see how you are able to control the ribbons and create such beautiful shapes according to the music. I would never thought I would have the opportunity to see such a great performance in my life.”

Suggestions for Future CESTL

While sharing their high praise about the 3rd CESTL, the students also provided their insightful suggestions on how to improve future CESTL events. Dr. Boyanton found these suggestions to be extremely valuable and she would definitely consider those suggestions in the future CESTL planning.

Some suggestions students gave included having students loaded their ppt slides to the computer desk top a day earlier, enforcing punctuality, providing folders for each person’s evaluation forms, not allowing people to come in during presentation to avoid interruption (instead, asking them to wait till that person finishes), having the pizza break a little earlier, being more strict with the time limit, having the presentation evaluation criteria more clearly explained to the presenters ahead of time, inviting more parents and families to attend, inviting previous CESTL student presenters to share their working experiences after graduated from UTB/TSC.

As for Rosalinda, her advice, is to encourage Dr. Boyanton keep CESTL going. She said, “My advice is that never stop doing CESTL, the students will really benefit from it!”

How did students feel about their CESTL experiences? Below are their feedback:

WOW! CESTL was such a great experience. When I first heard that we were going to have to present at a conference for eight and half hours, I wasn’t too excited. And even when I was there, I was not exactly looking forward to being there for a long time. Yet, despite this predisposition, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Luckily in high school I had the opportunity to publicly speak on many occasions. I was often the Master of Ceremonies at events held at school, participated in extracurricular activities in which I had to publicly speak, as well as say the announcements and Pledge of Allegiance every morning over the PA system. So all of this experience gave me the courage and the ability to present at CESTL with ease.

I was worried that I was going to be over time, but I feel that my presentation went well, as did everyone else’s. There was not a single person who went up there that I didn’t enjoy their presentation. It was a really humbling experience and it reminded me of why it is important to leave an impression on my future students. So many of us in there were motivated, pushed or were helped by teachers. It is imperative that we leave a lasting memory on our students to motivate them to do well in life.

I think that as far as advice for the next CESTL, I would keep stricter time limitations for the students. Even though I didn’t mind listening to the stories that went over time, I think that we wouldn’t have gotten out too late if the limit was enforced. Overall, I think it was organized very well, but also I feel that several students arrived late (I know several of them had classes) and disrupted the speaker. Maybe if students are arriving late, they should wait outside before presenter finishes. There could be a notice on the door advising this rule. Once the presenter is done, then they should be allowed in. I feel that several students were distracted as others entered/left during their presentation. Other than that, I think it went smoothly.

I’m glad that I had the experience of attending and presenting at CESTL. The stories I heard were touching and emotional. Some were funny and humorous. Overall, regardless of how much I wasn’t looking forward to it initially, I definitely would like to do something like this again and I, without doubt, am glad that I took this course with Dr. Dengting and had the opportunity to share my life experiences and learn from the lives of my peers. Thank you Dr. Dengting. I will never forget you or what you have taught me. You are an awesome teacher and we need more people like you in the world. Thank you for sharing your passion with us and for inspiring us to work so hard. I’ve never had any teacher push me so hard without being negative or demeaning. I appreciate everything you have done and the time you have spent in grading and lecturing. Congratulations with what you have done and I wish you the best of luck with your future endeavors!

The CESTL was a great experience! I was a bit worried about being contained in one room, forced to listen to 40 (or so) other people’s stories, but I was pleasantly proven wrong. It was such a great experience to consider the motives of other future educators. Some of the colleagues’ presentations were very emotionally stirring. Their experiences truly had an effect on them, and they were passionate about their work. I’m really grateful Dr. Dengting brought that out in all of us.

I was fairly satisfied with my performance. I think my explanations and PowerPoint flowed nicely. Reflecting back on the content of my slides, I wish I would have condensed the information A LOT-I think I had so much information that I wanted to get it out to everyone. At the same time, the large amount of information may have made it hard for some people to grasp. I felt like I just flew by without giving people a chance to register the implications of what I was saying! I think this will be one of my problems when I begin teaching-limiting the amount of information I give to my class at a time. I know there will not be enough time for my students to learn EVERYTHING, but I sure do wish I could teach them everything. There will be so much they do not know, and my natural instinct is to inform them. We’ll see how that goes once I begin my career.

For advice on the CESTL, I think we really should have begun at the time we said we would. Maybe in the future, you could require for students to be there 30 minutes earlier for roll call or risk losing participation points. This is just one idea, but the conference really exceeded its pre-set time frame. Also, a strict limit of 8 minutes to present and 2 minutes for discussion should be enforced. I know it was difficult to let someone who was showing so much emotion to know that their time was up, but maybe if it was emphasized more during class, the problem won’t be as bad.

One more suggestion-I think the evaluation policy should be discussed before the conference as well. I learned at the conference that we should give no points if there were no questions asked. I’m not sure if how many other people knew this, but I hope everyone did. Also, maybe everyone should send their PowerPoints to everyone in the class a day or two before; that way, everyone can be required to come up with at least one legitimate question for the presenter. Not everyone has to ask the presenter their question (that would take too much time), but at least someone will have a question for every presenter.

Although this presentation was hard work, I’m glad we did it. I feel like I have really contributed to my colleagues’ knowledge about how to manage their future classrooms. It was also very encouraging and inspiring to see everyone else doing such a great job-I know there are many, many great teachers in our group. Thank you Dr. Dengting for believing in us and for inspiring us to do our best always! (Ruben Rincon, Jr. EDCI 4322)

Even though it was really LONG, I really enjoyed hearing everyone’s personal stories. Some of them were very interesting, inspiring and emotional. Rosalinda’s story was very emotional; one would think that things like that don’t happen but I guess they do. It was so sad that lady she came to live with to get an education tricked her and wanted her to work as a maid.

Noelia’s story was also very emotional and inspiring. She so deeply wanted to come to college and get an education and somehow she always had an obstacle; she got pregnant. I’m glad that finally she had the opportunity to come to college and make her dream a reality. I wish my mom would get motivated like these ladies and so many other ladies in class decided to come to college and get an education.

I thought my presentation went very well I received several questions which I thought I was not going to get. I even told Abel to ask me a question just in case I didn’t get any questions. I felt very grateful that my peers took interest in my presentation. What I learned about myself was mostly that I am being to get more comfortable in public speaking which is very important for me since I’m going to be an art teacher.

My suggestion for future CESTL would be handing out the pizza much earlier because I started getting a headache because I was starving. People arrived there at one and we did not eat until around six; it was too many hours without eating. Another suggestion for future CESTL would be getting a lager room like a lecture hall because I really could not see to much of a difference from presenting in class to presenting in that room. The only difference was that people were well dressed and the time for the conferences was longer. I really was expecting the conference to be in a lecture hall, but overall it was a good experience. (Frank Barrera, EDCI 4322)

As I was driving to the education building for our CESTL conference I started to feel very nervous and started sweating. As I walked into the room I saw many of familiar faces that made me feel a little more comfortable. I had attended the other EDCI classroom about two weeks earlier which gave me the opportunity to meet some of those students that were at the conference. After being there for a couple minutes I said to myself, “This is no big deal. I can do this”, and I started feeling better and more confident. I started to realize that everyone was just as nervous as I was and that helped me.

As the other students started doing their presentation, my nervousness began to fade away because I started to realize that these were my classmates who I had spent all semester with and that I shouldn’t feel nervous. I had the opportunity to really know my classmates this semester. Thanks to Dr. Boyanton, presenting in front of them was like presenting in front of friends.

Everyone had a different story and they all caught my attention. I was really moved by some of the presentations that were presented and it makes me realize that I wasn’t the only one that struggled to get to where I am today. Some of the presentations made me sad and I realized that some students lived a harder life than I did and still found a way to keep learning and did well in school.

It was really interesting to hear my classmate’s personal struggles and I have a new respect for all of them. I don’t think I will ever forget any of them and I hope they won’t forget me, either. I loved this class and the way Dr. Boyanton taught it, I would recommend that nothing be changed from this class. I would love to thank Dr. Boyanton for this great experience and I have learned many things from her which I will definitely incorporate into my classrooms.

Again thank you, Dr. Boyanton!

I would also like to thank all my classmates. THANK YOU GUYS!! (Crespin Gonzalez)

First of all, I have to admit I did not like the idea of having to spend so many hours in the conference but once the conference got started and I started to listen and learn from everyone’s stories and experiences I lost a track of time. Time when by so fast and I enjoyed every minute of the castle. I was extremely nervous and scared, I guess because of my language barrier I get embarrassed and scared of mispronouncing something and I freeze. And it happened, I froze for a second and lost track of what I was saying but I got right back to it and continued. My presentation did not really go the way I planned I let my nerves get control of me and I forgot to mention many things I wanted to.

But after I was done with my speech I still felt proud of myself for getting through it and I felt relieved. I definitely learned to get over one of my biggest fears, public speaking I also learned to trust my peers with my personal life. I am the one who always thought personal life should be kept personal; but after the castle I learned it is o.k. to let go and share for the best. I think we all learned from each other and everybody did an outstanding job with their research. I would not change any thing about the castle conference. Every thing was well planned and organized and everybody looked so professional. It was a great practice and introduction for what the future has in store for us as future educators. I thank Dr. Boyanton for bringing the best out of us and for showing us what we are capable of. (Erika De La Garza)

I am speechless when it comes to last night’s CESTL conference. Everyone was so supportive and everyone I feel did an amazing job presenting. The environment was a lot more comfortable that I had expected being with another class that we did not know too well. I ended up knowing a few other people from the class and they were all respectful and supportive to all of us.

I personally had never been involved in something like this; it made me feel as if I can accomplish anything now. I had always been terrified of public speaking but after last night I always have to remind myself that I did it once I can do it again. I was pretty satisfied with my presentation because like I said I was always shy and afraid of public speaking. Then once I was up there in front of everyone I let go and realized these classmates were not here to judge me or make fun of me, they were simply here to learn.

I feel I have learned a lot from this experience. First of all, I have learned that there are amazing teachers out there that will go to the limit to help their students feel comfortable and important. I think we all have Dr. Boyanton to thank for everything. I also learned a lot from my peers. They shared stories in the CESTL that will stick with me forever. I learned good ways to be and affective teacher and bad ways. I feel everything went perfect in the CESTL, the only thing we could have improved one was the scheduling. Make sure we keep time properly, but besides that I feel the night went better than I every expected. Thank you, Dr. Boyanton for this amazing experience. (Patricia Amador)

I remember being really nervous about doing my presentation, but I think it went really well over all. I remember my parents calling me every hour to see at what time I would pass. I am really glad they showed up because even though I am 23, married and have my kids, they still support me in my education. I think that since we prepared for that all month long, everything was good to go. The only thing we had to worry about was how we would do when the time actually come to give our presentation.

I really thought I was going to be nervous when I passed to the front but once I was up there I felt really comfortable, mainly because my parents were there. My dad is really big on family and gets really sentimental when he hears us tell them that we appreciate them for everything we have done. As soon as I started my presentation, he was crying, so soon after I couldn’t hold it. Thank God! I didn’t cry like a baby.:)

Over all, I had fun that day, even though the hours were long. This entire month was really a month that I will not forget. I met new people and even found a person in whom I had something in common. I no longer feel alone in things that have happened to me in the past. And to that person, she should walk proud because she has done so much for herself this far. There is still more to come.

I think in the future I will visit one of these conferences when the opportunity comes along again. You learn about how there are different lifestyles and backgrounds to everyone and we need to learn how to adapt to them and not judge them by a simple statistic or by how we think they are. We should take our time to meet with everyone individually and find that inner personality they have. (Michelle Shogreen)

I would first thank you again Dr. Boyanton for preparing such a stimulating, interesting, and informative course for this session of summer. Your, or should I say our class has been wonderfully challenged and stimulated in many ways. RIGHT everyone?!!! It has allowed us to bond almost from the very first day.

I know that many of my classmates/friends will go on to obtain their master degrees as well as be fantastic teachers wherever they teach. Some will get their PHD’s and hopefully do positive things for the future of students in this or any country abroad if they chose too. Everyone did a terrific job presenting last night. I am glad that we got to have that experience. It is just another way in which you have helped to prepared us—your students, for what challenges we may face as educators. It starts with us from the first day to the last as future educators and it is transferred and carried on by the students in which we influence each day. Hopefully we can instill and inspire them as we have been. I really enjoyed the experience of learning from and about all of you. I will never forget this class. Take Care and God Bless You All. Thank you again Dr. Boyanton!
JL Jones

Well, I have to say that I am very proud of my performance and everybody else’s. I really believe that we all did such a great job. I couldn’t believe that I did it! I can actually say that I am very proud of my performance. I am usually not satisfied with my performances but this time I was. When I first had to do it in class, I hated the way it turned out because I felt that I had skipped so many things and I wasn’t able to get my points across, but when I did it at the conference, I felt that I was able to make my points and tell my complete story.

I never thought I would say this, but I actually enjoyed this conference. It was a big learning experience for me. After talking in front so many people I feel that now I am able to do any presentation. I will probably still be nervous, but at least I know now that I am capable of doing it.

I also liked this conference because it gave us a chance to learn a lot about everybody’s life and it allowed me to see how important family is to most of us. Family support is very important and that is the reason most of us are in college today. We all want to make our families proud.

For future CESTL conferences, I think that Dr. Dengting should tell all the students to have their power point slides ready the day before the conference that way they can save it to the computer ahead of time. I think that it would save a lot of time. (Monique Solis)

Today was the CESTL conference. I was so nervous that I felt like crying as soon as I stepped in. Once I saw our classmates it made me feel even more uneasy because they were all dressed professionally. I thought that with our wardrobe we actually already looked like teachers which made me feel anxious. I started seeing everyone go up to the front and present. All of them were doing so well that it made me feel as if I was going to do horrible.

As soon as I had to sit on the chair to wait for my turn I started shaking all over. I couldn’t control my legs and my hands. But it was so awkward when I actually got up there because it was all a blur. Why was it a blur? Well, I actually didn’t even feel as myself up there, I had this confidence that I actually never have, it was interesting to feel it. I remember getting some questions from others and answering them.

But as soon as I sat down I didn’t even remember what I had answered or said. I doubted myself and thought, did I actually just do that? I did it! I was relieved I felt so hot afterwards because I knew that I was relieved. Thank you Dr. Boyanton for having us speak in this conference because I never would’ve imagined myself doing so. I have had a wonderful summer in this course. I can honestly say that I have known most of my classmates in a deeper perspective and hopefully made new friends. I hope all of my classmates and Dr. Boyanton as well have every dream fulfilled and that they can achieve them with positive outcomes. Thank you all for a wonderful class! (Cristina A. Garcia)

I am so happy that finally we did the CESTL. I was very nervous at fist, but after seeing everybody go up, and I felt very proud of everyone, and I felt that I worried too much because it was not that hard, it was very challenging but I feel it was another accomplished goal. I feel very satisfied with my performance, I talked about my research and I felt very familiar with everyone, I did not feel nervous once I was there in front of everyone and for that I feel very satisfied and proud of myself.

I learned a lot from this experience; it was great to see other person’s perspective on education and their points of view on what they think can affect a student. I though it was great and I learned a lot from everyone.

One suggestion that I would give to improve future CESTL is to the students to keep their story under their research question; I saw many student’s topic were mainly focused on their lives and did not relate it to the main question which was how that special topic influenced their life as a student; for example if they chose how their parents influenced their life as a student; students should have had related their story on their parents influence and not get off the subject like telling their whole life story and things that were not relevant to their parents relation to their education. That is just my point of view, personally I tried to keep my story only related to my topic and not to go very deeply into my personal life which had nothing to do with my education. (Kesia Martinez)

I felt really excited about the CESTL. I’m not going to lie, at first I felt so nervous I thought I was not going to be able to do a good presentation in front of everybody. I felt my heart pumping every second during the presentation. But overall, I think that I did a good job and I feel proud of myself. I know I did talk very fast, I should have slowed down but since I was so nervous just to the fact that I was the center to everyone’s attention made me feel more nervous than what I was. I really learned that no matter what obstacles you confront in your way, always continue to be optimistic and motivated to succeed throughout life. I really think that everything came out so perfect that I don’t think there’s any suggestion to improve in future CESTL Presentations. Thank you very much Dr. Boyanton , I really enjoyed and learned a lot from you. You have really motivated me and I’m pretty sure to the rest of my classmates as well. (Nidia Lopez)

Well to begin with I thought that this night would never come. When I first found out about the CESTL conference I am not going to deny it but I was terrified. The closer we got to the event I was really nervous. Well, when I shared my story at the conference I was really anxious and nervous and I really did not know how I was going to go up there and share my experience. I knew it would be really emotional. I was afraid of letting my emotions go and not be able to continue.

After I started going up there I knew this was it. I had to get my strength and courage to do it. I was really glad with my outcome. I never really thought I could do it. I think it would have been that nerve-wrecking if it had not been based on my life. Yet, I knew I had to share my story with others.

I am glad I got the courage to come out in the open and talk. I wanted everyone to see that regardless of how we grew up, we could do changes of our own. That I learned from my past to stay strong and keep going. I am really glad I got the chance to share my story. Thank You, Dr. Boyanton for believing in each one of us to be able to go up there and speak. I will always look back at this as an incredible learning experience for me as an educator and as a parent. (Margarita Trevino)

Today was the CESTL presentation. I was nervous when I got there and I saw many unfamiliar faces. The good thing is that in our table we were all nervous before presenting we would say good luck to each other and at the end of the presentation we would say good job.

I liked the intermission when Mrs. Boyanton did the ribbon dance that was actually relaxing. She did a great job. She also did a presentation that was nice of her because she went through what we went through well speaking is no problem to her but she got sentimental when she was doing her presentation but she still went on like a professional.

The CESTL had a little of everything. At the beginning I though eight hours is going to be a long time but once we were there time flew fast. It was my turn to go up there I got really nervous that I made my presentation short. This is what I hate about presentation. I always have ready what I am going to say but once I am up there I tend to skip things. I had my notes with me but I didn’t want to use them because everybody looked so confident and they didn’t use them so I got shy to use them. I really like to be like my peers even though they were nervous they went up there and were so confident and did a good job and everything look so natural. As I was doing my presentation I felt that mine was one of the worst presentations and I was disappointed but when I got to my table my peers said you did a good job I felt better. I am glad it’s over and I hope that I gave my point across. (Tania Teran)

Wow! I was really amazed about everybody’s presentation, it was really emotional and touching, I learned a lot from everyone. This was my first experience ever in giving a story of my life to strangers. But you know it was worth it, after a while I felt that all those people, I knew them from a long time. I am really glad that Dr. Boyanton made us participate on this presentation.
.
I was really nervous when I arrived, even though I was the 4th one from the end. But after seeing everyone’s presentation, I felt more confident. When it was my turn I just was honest and said what I needed to say. Maybe I did forget some important key points, but overall I was proud of myself.
.
I learned a lot from this experience. This was something new for me to do. I learned a lot from my peers and their situations. Their stories touched me and I really enjoyed how everybody was raised differently.

My advice for the CESTL will be to have more people involved, parents and family, it will be a good learning experience for them as well. Overall, it was a success and I was really proud to be part of this presentation.

Thanks, Dr. D. Boyanton (Sandra Rosales)

I was very nervous to present my research on how motivation has played an impact on the kind of learner I am. Mostly, because the research made me go back to all stages of my life, I told Dr. Denting a few days before CESTL that my research could be very sad. She recommended me to focus on the times that I was very motivated to keep learning. I felt more positive and tried to my best. I learned to admit that my mom's unique way of raising me helped my sister, brother and I to become good people. Then, I came out with the idea that I would like to invite everyone in the conference to ride the roller coaster to see my motivation phases as a learner. I felt good during my presentation. I would like to have more professors to engage me in this manner to become less anxious about public speaking.

I am not just adding Dr. Denting in my list of motivators, yet I am locking her energetic motivation deep in my heart. She is my role model for now on.

One suggestion to improve our future CESTL is to invite someone from previous CESTL for students to see a UTB student's life after college. Another suggestion is to keep manilla folders with each student's name and as they present the other students could put in their evaluations. In that manner, Dr. D. Boyanton does not have to go and organize so many evaluations.
(Irene Olmos)

I really enjoyed the conference. It was really interesting to listen to other people's experiences and to be able to share mine with others. I really enjoyed the red ribbon dance!! It was amazing to see how you are able to control the ribbons and create such beautiful shapes according to the music. I would never thought I would have the opportunity to see such a great performance in my life. I am really interested in the Chinese culture, especially because the University Mariachi got invited to go perform in China next May. I can't wait to go and see a little bit of what your world and culture is like. I am really looking forward to that trip!

Going back to the CESTL I was really nervous. I feel like I did better in the rehearsal than at the conference :( My friend said that I said things that did not make any sense. I also want to thank you for giving me the opportunity to perform at the conference.

The CESTL made me realize that other people have many problems as well as me. I learned that parenting is a big influence in their children. I got to learn about other people's lives, the way they grew and I got ideas about how to raise my children in the future. I learned about what things to do and not to do to help my own children and also future students.

Your class has been one of the best classes I have ever taken. I learned a lot about others and most importantly it helped me learned a lot about myself. Thank you for your dedication and for everything you taught us in this summer session. Time went so fast, and I will never forget how interesting and fun at the same time your class was!
(Karina Vela)

The experience with the CESTL was wonderful, I learned a lot not only from all the participants but from myself. I never thought that I could stand in front of a big group and talk about my life. It was very emotional but even with that I could do it. I am glad that I decided to take this class and specially with you Dr. Boyanton, I learned a lot from you as a caring person , excellent teacher and professional. It is an honor to have teachers like you in our university. Thank you.

About my performance I can not said that I was satisfied, I was emotional and nervous. But I am proud that even with that I did it!!!!!!!!!

My advice is that NEVER stop doing CESTL, the students will really benefit from it!

The CESTL PRESENTATIONS: This is a great way to understand the differences in other people’s lives. I enjoyed listening to the presentations of the other students. I wish that there was a way for it to be done over a two day period, so that some could have more time to finish their presentations without having to feel rushed or cut short, and that some would be more efficient in their presentation to make it more evenly balanced. I also hope that we are evaluated according to the Criteria which were laid out in the syllabus and sample presentation, that would mean a great deal to everyone or at least most that presented in the designated manner. Thanks Again Dr. Boyanton.
(Jerome Jones, June 30, 2008)

When I was walking to the classroom where the CESTL Conference was going to take place, I was so nervous and started to panic. I didn’t think that I was going to be able do the presentation. When I walked in, at the far corner, I saw Michelle and Martha waving at me because they had saved a seat for me. Once I sat down I was feeling a little less nervous because there were still about seven people ahead of me.

Once I was next to present, I was a little nervous, but the worst part was that my throat was too dry. I wish I could have done a better job presenting. I didn’t like the fact that I was having problems pronouncing adjustment, and that I kept choking up on when I was trying to talk. I really enjoyed everyone’s presentations. It really makes you see that you are not the only one that has had difficulties learning.

The CESTL was a great experience for me because it helps us develop our skills in presenting in front of the class. It always allows us to learn about the different learning strategies that people use to learn. Thank you Dr. Dengting for giving us this great opportunity and for all that you have thought us. You are a wonderful professor, the university needs more professor like you. (Annabel Esparza, June 30, 2008)

Even though I was not able to attend the CESTL presentation, it was a wonderful experience to be able to present my power point presentation to my classmates today. I was able to see every body’s presentation through blackboard, and it was nice that everyone had the courage to share their lives with the class.

In today’s presentation I felt nervous but I was confident that I could do a good job, I don’t know how I did since, I didn’t received any feedback from my peers or professor. The research was very helpful and valuable because I had the chance to go back to my life and remember a little bit of how I was raised up. This presentation had a lot of value because we were talking about our life in front of everybody, I want to congratulate every peer for their hard work, and no matter what we all did a great job. Because is not easy to have the courage and talk about ourselves.

Like I mentioned above I did not had the pleasure to attend the CESTL on Friday but I heard a lot of good things from my peers, most of them enjoyed it they cried and laughed with the presentation. Everyone had an excellent day at the presentations. Once again thank you for you time and dedication Dr. Boyanton!
(Diamantina Chavez)

I believe that everyone did a great job, because it is not an easy task to present in front of your peers. The CESTL conference went well, although I was not expecting to stay till 10pm. The pizza intermission was very good, because I had not eaten all day. There were so many great presentations and I feel so enlightened. I’m glad I was part of this conference, because this experience has shown me a different side of me.

I feel relieved that my presentation is over with. I was not nervous or scared, but I felt all that pressure built up inside of me before the conference. I feel that after hearing all those life experiences, my mind was finally at peace. I feel I could have done better with my presentation, but then again I always feel that way about any task I take. This class has shown me that “life must be taken a day at a time.”

This conference is very intense and I believe that timing is very important. The eight minute rule is very important as well. I also feel that starting on-time is a must. I would have preferred a wireless microphone for the presentation. I don’t feel that anything else was missing. Everything was very well executed.

Thank you once again Dr. Boyanton for the opportunity of giving us the tools to reflect, not only on the psyche of children, but on our own lives. This class was a very eye-opening experience for me. I will not forget this motivation, learning environment and my peers. Thank you for everything Dr. Denting Boyanton.
(Abel Gomez)

Although Friday was an extremely long day, I was very pleased with how everyone in our class was confident during their presentation. I can honestly say that I learned a lot about everyone through their stories. Each presentation reflected the topics within the chapters that we had been going over in class. This experience has been stressful yet wonderful at the same time. Thank You Dr. Boyanton for having confidence in all of us. You have been the first education teacher that has justified my decision in becoming an educator.
(Lisa Avalos, June 30, 2008)

I felt that the whole experience was interesting and certainly something for the majority of us. It was tiring having to sit there for such a long amount of time, but I made it through the whole conference, so I guess it was not that bad. I was satisfied with my performance, but I did not feel I did the best that I could have done to present more effectively. By the time I went up to do presentation I was exhausted and was not thinking at 100% of my mental capability. I learned that the will to succeed or to change your life from how you were brought up can push you through some of hardest things a person can go through.

I was also amazed at how many people from outside showed up and stayed for the whole event. I was even more surprised to see some parents and other family members attend the conference for a couple of hours to support their loved ones. I would have liked to see another person helping out Dr. Boyanton making sure that people sign-in and put their powerpoint slides in the computer. I also would have stressed the importance of showing up early in order to avoid starting late which is what happened on Friday.

Welcome to the CESTL! This is a conference on classroom teaching and learning at both the elementary and secondary school level. CESTL is organized by instructor Dr. Dengting Boyanton and all of her students currently taking her courses EDCI 4322 Human Development & Instruction and EDCI 4322 Human Development & Instruction in the School of Education at the University of Texas at Brownsville (UTB).

The 3rd CESTL will show research conducted by all of our student researchers during the summer session, who spent this whole semester investigating one research topic of their interest under Dr. Boyanton’s guidance and supervision. Specific research method used was self-study, through which our students explored their own growing up experiences and stories as a learner.

This conference will cover a wide range of topics related to classroom teaching and learning including learning and motivation, learning environment, learning process, learning conditions, peer relationship and learning, parenting and learning, teacher characteristics and learning, learning disability, race and learning, culture and learning, and many more…

CESTL is open to public and welcomes all who have interest in our students’ research! Please mark your calendar and join us in this exciting and inspiring event. We would deeply appreciate if you could help us spread the news among your students, colleagues, friends, or whoever will be interested.

We look forward to seeing you in the 3rd CESTL!

2nd CESTL Story: A Powerful Learning Experience

A Powerful Learning Experience:

The 2nd CESTL Conference

Curriculum & Instruction

School of Education
University of Texas at Brownsville

April 26, 2008 was a special date for all the undergraduates who were taking EDCI 4322 Human Development & Instruction course and the graduate students of EDCI 6304 Learning & Cognition course in the School of Education at the University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College (UTB/TSC). On that day, a special conference—Conference of Elementary Secondary Teaching & Learning (CESTL)—was held in the elegant EDBC Cassia Room in the School of Education. This CESTL conference was special in the way that it was a student-run conference: It was organized by the students, for the students, and presented by the students themselves. It was special because not only were the students the participants, but also they were the presenters themselves.

On Saturday, a total of 50 students presented their research at the CESTL, plus about 20 other people from the UTB/TSC and the Brownsville community attended this conference as well. The CESTL conference covered a wide range of topics related to classroom teaching and learning including learning and motivation, learning environment, learning process, learning conditions, learning style, learning strategies, peer relationship and learning, learning and instruction, teacher characteristics and learning, professional development and teaching, special education, race and learning, culture and learning, and policy and learning. All these topics were selected by the students themselves based on their own interest. As a special treat, intermissions of the CESTL included music and cultural performance of a Chinese ribbon dance.

Background of the CESTL

What’s the story behind CESTL? How was the CESTL developed at UTB/TSC? The CESTL was developed by Dr. Dengting Boyanton, a new Assistant Professor of Educational Psychology in the Curriculum & Instruction department in the School of Education. As a learning psychologist, Dr. Boyanton strongly believes that learning is more powerful when the students take an active role in their own learning through actively exploring, observing, reflecting, analyzing, and making sense out of their own world rather than being passively told so by the professors. She also believes that learning is more powerful when the students are able to teach others what they have learned. Lastly, Dr. Boyanton believes that learning should be shared with others and knowledge should be used to contribute to the society. “My students are doing a lot of wonderful research. I think it will be a shame if nobody knows about and benefits from it. That’s why I strive to create a community of knowledge-sharing in the classroom; and I always encourage my students to share their work with and learn from each other.” Said Boyanton. “And this is why I would like to organize a student-run conference.”

However, CESTL was not the first but the second student-run conference organized by Dr. Boyanton. The idea of having a student-run conference had been in her mind when she was still studying at the University of Virginia (UVa) as a doctoral student. In fact, her first trial was when she was directing an Intensive Chinese Language Program as the Program Director in summer, 2007 at UVa. This Chinese language program was eight-week long and all her students were beginners without any Chinese background. On the first day of this program, Dr. Boyanton introduced the course project and stated that they were expected to do research on China and present their findings at the China in Foreigners’ Eye Conference (CFEC), all her students were shocked at that moment. “Presenting a research about China after eight weeks of learning Chinese? And using Chinese only? How can that be possible?” For most students, Dr. Boyanton was expecting a miracle. “That was a very daunting task.” Said Professor Fred Damon, a UVa Anthropology Professor who was then taking the summer Chinese course with Dr. Boyanton.

However, after eight weeks, the miracle happened. The China in Foreigners’ Eye Conference (CFEC) turned out to be a huge success. All the students did a fabulous job presenting their research on China at the conference, speaking fluent and beautiful Chinese. Not only was Dr. Boyanton pleased, all her students themselves were amazed by their own progress. The success of this Chinese Language Program immediately attracted attention from the public and it has since been reported by both local and national media including UVa Today, Daily Progress, Cavalier Daily, and Qiaobao 侨报 (China Press). Dr. Boyanton learned one important lesson from this experience: “Don’t let the students tell you that they cannot do it, because they can, if they try hard enough.”

Preparing for the CESTL

Preparing for the CESTL has been a long, challenging, and time-consuming process in the parts of both Dr. Boyanton and her students. The students started working on it almost the minute they walked into Dr. Boyanton’s first class. “This course requires you to do a lot of work. This is a course where you are not just the learner, but also the researcher. Not only are you expected to attend this course weekly, but also to do a lot of fieldwork outside of the class. You will present your research findings at the CESTL conference.” Dr. Boyanton stated her high expectations for the students while welcoming them with a big smile on her face. One thing for sure, all the students immediately felt overwhelmed and yet motivated at the same time. “When the syllabus was introduced and reviewed, I must admit I felt a little overwhelmed. I felt overwhelmed because of the assignments required for the class, but then I felt a sense of motivation as well.” Said Mayra Garcia, a graduate student from the Learning & Cognition course.

Throughout the whole semester, Dr. Boyanton spent a lot of time guiding the students conducting their research step by step from how to choose a research topic, how to form a good research question, how to write the research proposal, how to contact the research site and participants, how to observe in the classroom, how to conduct the interviews, how to write up the final paper report, and above all, how to give a powerful presentation. “Teaching the course materials and supervising over 50 students’ field research at the same time was a challenge. The main challenge I had was the time. I had a lot of course materials to cover; and guiding them how to conduct the research was time-consuming because few students knew how to do it. Therefore, class time was really precious for me and I had to design each of my lesson plans very carefully to make sure every minute was fully used.” Dr. Boyanton said.

Since the first class, all students have been very excited and motivated to do their research project and worked extremely hard throughout the whole semester. Of course, there were some down moments and also a lot of confusions, frustrations, struggle, and stress during the whole research process due to the fact that many students “have never done this before,” and “have no idea where to start.” Also, some students doubted themselves and were convinced that they would never accomplish this task. However, all students worked steadily hard despite of all the challenges and difficulties. They received a lot of feedback as well as encouragement from Dr. Boyanton from time to time. They constantly worked and reworked on the project, making progresses and gaining confidence little by little. “These students were extremely motivated and hardworking. I am touched by their strong will power, and I am impressed by the amount of time and effort they put in their research project.” Dr. Boyanton said.

In order to prepare for the final presentation at the CESTL, many students have practiced many times with their friends, spouses, cousins, and brothers and sisters. “I practiced with one of my colleagues, then I practiced at home with my family.” Said graduate student Griselda Garcia, “I hope everybody enjoyed my presentation.”

Although preparing for the CESTL took a lot of time and effort, most students actually enjoyed this process. “Preparing for the CESTL was one of the most enjoyable assignments I have ever had. Sure, it was a little stressful, especially that last week of trying to make sure I was ready for it. I rehearsed my presentation so many times with a stopwatch, but I was still so nervous that I was going to mess up on my timing.” Said Eldon Clark, an undergraduate from the Human Development & Instruction course.

Presenting at the CESTL

After a whole semester’s hard work, stress, preparation, and waiting, April 26 finally arrived! How did the students do at the CESTL? How did they feel? Naturally, almost all students felt extremely nervous, anxious, and scared about the conference. During the last class period prior to the conference, Dr. Boyanton noticed that all students looked extremely tense, which was very unusual for them. So she asked, “I see you that are all feeling very anxious about the conference. From 1 to 10, how high is your anxiety level right now?” “11!” Some students responded, which was true for most students. “The CESTL was an experience that I will never forget. I felt so many emotions at one time, fear, nervous, and anxiety.” Said Kristy, an undergraduate from the Human Development & Instruction course. “To be honest with you, I was really scared and nervous before I did my presentation.” Said undergraduate Karla Araujo.

“I was very nervous and the truth was that I did not want to participate, but I told myself that I could do it, and that someday I had to do it and this was the moment. When I was waiting for my turn, I tried to control my nervousness, but when it was almost my turn, I started trembling…” Nanyka shared similar experiences about the CESTL.

However, after the presentations, all the fear and anxiety disappeared, replaced with relief, joy, excitement, confidence, pride, and sense of achievement. This strong sense of achievement forced the students to take a new look at themselves and realize how much potentials they had. For example, after the presentation, undergraduate Kristy surprisingly realized that she actually was “capable of giving a presentation in front of many other people.”

The most powerful impact that the CESTL had on the students, was that it instilled a strong sense of pride, confidence, and achievement in them. “When I finished speaking, I felt relaxed and proud of myself because of all the hard work I put into this presentation.” Said undergraduate Suki. “This presentation was a wonderful experience for all of us who participated... At the end, we were all very proud of ourselves and we were very excited because we did it.” Said undergraduate Nanyka. Undergraduate Jessica Arriaga commented that the CESTL “was an achievement for everyone to share their findings in their research.” Karla Araujo, another undergraduate was amazed how this CESTL experience dramatically helped her increase her self-esteem:

"When I went back to my seat, Sandra came up to me and congratulated me, I felt so good! She showed me once again, that people can really make you feel great again, and right there, I gain some much confidence on myself and I know that I can fulfill my goals. Then, a girl from another class came up to me, too, and asked me some questions about my research; she told me that her daughter had just been diagnosed with autism and told me that she really liked my presentation, I felt so good! When the presentations were done, some of my friends and I were leaving, and a lady from another class came up to us and told me that, she really liked my presentation, and that I covered so much information and explained it in a way that it was easy to understand. Right there, I felt in heaven! It is amazing how ones’ self-esteem can get really high after getting some amazing feedback!" Karla described her experience.

Another characteristic of the CESTL conference was that many students felt that they gained so much valuable information on teaching and learning through listening to each others’ presentations. “The presentation was most importantly a learning experience where you interchange knowledge with others by giving and receiving.” Said Jessica Arriaga. As a result of this knowledge “giving and receiving,” students felt more motivated and better prepared for their future teaching career. As Eldon Clark put it:

"The thing I liked most about it is with all of your great ideas that you shared, I feel better prepared to be a teacher. After Saturday, I have never been so excited to walk into my own classroom for the first time! Thanks, guys, for your presentations, and thanks, Dr. Boyanton, for giving us this opportunity."

“I really enjoyed everyone's presentation. A lot of hard work and time went into the presentations. I think that everyone at the conference walked away with new information.” Said Nora Lamas, a graduate student from Learning & Cognition course. Analicia Springer, another graduate student added that this CESTL conference provided her with “a new perspective” on her teaching practices especially on how to motivate middle school students to learn.

Needless to say, all students were impressed with their own and each others’ presentations. “I was amazed at the dedication and knowledge all my peers showed on Saturday. I was actually impressed, very impressed. I think we all did a great job.” Said Valerie Green, an undergraduate from the Human Development & Instruction course.

While the undergraduates felt very “intimidated” by the presence of graduate students, all the graduate students were very impressed by the undergraduates’ performance at the CESTL. “I was impressed with the undergraduates' work and hope that they are as committed when they become educators. Their presentations showed countless hours of work.” Said graduate student Aracelie Gutierrez. Dorothy Hung, another graduate student from Singapore, expressed her impressions of the undergraduate students:

"When I look at the undergraduates and the work that they have done, I can easily believe that the extent of work they had put in must have been far beyond what was required of them. They have shown me a new face of Brownsville that I have not seen before. I think there is much hope for Brownsville, Texas, I believe they represent the cream of the crop. They are not only intelligent but also passionate to become teachers. They will do what is best for their students. Perhaps more than anything, they seemed to have come away, from their research, with the understanding of what good teachers are like and how they too can become good future educators. When this group of young people starts their career, I believe as they become more confident of themselves, they will become movers and shakers in the field of education, or whatever they choose to be."

Overall Impression of the CESTL

So how do students feel about the CESTL experience as a whole? Although the conference lasted for eight hours (from 11:30am to 7:30pm), and some students felt hungry and exhausted by the end, all students reported that they enjoyed this experience and had a great time. Undergraduate student Robert Ramirez described the CESTL as “one of the most interesting and enjoyable experiences” he had ever attended or been part of in his life. Eldon Clark summarized this conference as “fun, exciting, nerve-racking, and an overall great experience.” Undergraduate Maricela Gonzalez said that she “had an absolute blast this term.” Graduate student Mayra Garcia enjoyed the CESTL because “it brought our class closer together.” And if you ask undergraduate student Ry* what he enjoyed most at the CESTL, he would tell you that not just the many wonderful presentations, but also the fact of being with his classmates who had become his good friends, and above all, the Chinese Ribbon Dance performed by Dr. Boyanton.

"I enjoyed myself with my friends. I learned a lot and heard some very interesting things on Saturday. And to be real honest, the cherry on top was your ribbon dance!! I loved it!! I thank you for showing us and giving us a taste of your culture because as you know I am fascinated by other cultures. Thank you for a wonderful experience over all at my first conference where I was a presenter." Ry* said.

Will the students attend the CESTL again? The answer is definitely “yes” for most students. “I spent a memorable Saturday learning about various educational topics ranging from learning strategies to high stakes testing.” Said graduate student Emily Fierros, “I would love to attend this type of research conference again.”

How did Dr. Boyanton feel about this CESTL experience over all? “I felt great! Like the students, I also felt joy, pride, excitement, and sense of achievement. As an educator, nothing makes me happier to watch my students walk out of my classroom with the feelings of excitement, satisfaction, confidence, sense of achievement, and passion for teaching.” Said Dr. Boyanton.

Wow!!! I cannot explain with words what I felt in yesterday‘s presentation. Sincerely I was very nervous and the truth I did not want to participate, but I told to myself that I could do it and that someday I had to do it and this was the moment. When I was waiting for my turn I tried to control my nervous, but when was almost my turn I was trembling. Finally I did it and then I felt very relaxed, it was not too bad.

I think that this presentation was a wonderful experience for all of us that participated. First of all we learned about many topics and then we beat the nervous of talking in public. At the end we all were very proud of ourselves and we were very excited because we did it. I really like the experience I never thought of being part of such event. I enjoyed every presentation even thought at the end we were a little hungry and tired. I wanted to stay until the end because I was in the first ones and everybody listened to me and I thought in the last ones and I think they deserve the same respect, so I was there until the end.

Thanks Dr. Boyanton for always be there supporting us and having high expectations in all of her students. I enjoyed a lot this course and I will be happy to recommend you, but not as an easy class as a learning experience to grow academically and personally. Thank You very much for your patience and for all!

I really enjoyed attending this conference. I feel that I really learned a lot. I think that this was a very good learning experience and I looked forward to more opportunities like this one. I must admit that at the beginning I was a little nervous and not too excited about having to present in front of a lot of people, but when I got there I realized that there were only other classmates and also a couple of other students and I began to feel a little more comfortable.

I feel that this will serve as a great experience and that it will help us in the future as teachers. This also helped me to realize that I am capable of giving a presentation in front of many other people. Overall, I had a great time, the only thing was that I did have to leave a little early, so I missed about three presentations at the end, but I am sure that they were just as great as the others. The only thing is that I am sorry for my fellow classmates and others that I did not get to see there presentations, because I know that they put lots of work and effort in preparing. For the next time, I will make sure that I am able to stay until the very end.

This Saturday’s Teacher Conference was a very rewarding experience. At first, I must admit, I was very nervous and anxious to get it over with. Then, I realize that my peers felt the same way and for most of us it was the first time presenting with a bigger audience than just the normal classmates. By now the presentation had become a beneficial challenge I had to overcome for my own good.

I realize that this challenge was not only going to help me practice my communication skills in presentation but also share the work I had done through the semester. I’m sure it was an achievement for everyone to share their findings in their research and to have a taste of what is like to be a real teacher in an everyday classroom. The presentation was most importantly a learning experience where you interchange knowledge with others by giving and receiving.

Finally, I feel like my professor really cares about her students for the dedication and the amount of hard work she inputs. There are not many professors that actually take the time to give feedback in order to see their student’s improvement, or that dedicate their weekend to education. This Saturday Professor Boyanton demonstrated she has high expectations for every student. In my personal opinion she has helped me become a more efficient and productive individual. This class has given me the confidence to believe that nothing is impossible if you have the determination to work hard for what you want.
— Jessica Arriaga, EDCI 4322-01, April 27, 2008

Oh my God! I can't believe we finally did it!!! I believe that it was worth all stress and hard work we all went through. To be honest with you, I was really scared and nervous before I did my presentation, I was not sure I could do as well as my peers.

When I was in front doing my presentation, I saw that some of my peers were really interested on what I was saying, that, made my nerves calm down a little. Then when I saw the “timing guy” telling me I had only two more minutes, oh my god! Freaked out again! Again, I looked at my peers and I continued with the presentation, unfortunately, I didn’t have time for questions.

When I went to my place, Sandra came up to me and congratulated me, I felt so good! She showed me once again, that people can really make you feel great again, and right there, I gain some much confidence on myself and I know that I can fulfill my goals. Then, a girl from another class came up to me too, and asked me some questions about my research; she told me that her daughter had just been diagnosed with autism and told me that she really liked my presentation, I felt so good! When the presentations were done, some of my friends and I were leaving, and a lady from another class came up to us and told me that, she really liked my presentation, and that I covered so much information and explained it in a way that it was easy to understand. Right there, I felt in heaven! It is amazing how ones’ self-esteem can get really high after getting some amazing feedback!

The CESTL conference was a great experience for me. This conference had many different insights about this conference. Some people were nervous, stressed, anxious, and excited. I know that I was so nervous to go up and speak in front of fellow classmates and other students from other classes. I was calm throughout the conference, but when it came around my turn I became nervous. When I was presenting I was concentrating on trying to cover all the information and trying not to look nervous. When I finished speaking I felt relaxed and proud of myself because of all the hard work I put into this presentation.

It was a long day filled with a lot of information by other students. Many of people were tired and exhausted including myself, but everyone was very respectful towards one another and listened throughout the conference. All of the presentations were very interesting. There were a few presentations that were about the same information and what I saw very interesting was that everyone had their unique style of explaining their information. I really enjoyed this conference and will use the information that I have learned and apply it in my future as a teacher.

This past Saturday, I took part in the 2nd Conference of Elementary-Secondary Teaching & Learning (CESTL). It was definitely a new experience for me and I enjoyed it. I got to see what other future educators look like…and noticed that ‘hey, they are just like me…chasing their dream of one day becoming a teacher.’ It was quite inspiring to be among them and see how far they too have come in their pursuit.

The conference was held because Dr. Boyanton feels it very necessary to educate us on classroom teaching and learning at both the elementary and secondary school level. I thought that I learned a great deal that day and noticed that teachers have to be very organized and well prepared to meet the needs of their students. This is the technology generation and we must be up to date with that. My particular topic was on the best conditions conducive to learning and I found great research ideas.

I think I did a good job conveying my findings to those in attendance. They seemed to appreciate the data they I relayed and I liked the positive feedback that I received in return. Furthermore, I now saw how my observation hours were relative to my research data. Also, how my own self reflection has helped me discover who I want to be as a teacher and facilitator. After all, teaching is a profession and we must act professional to make sure that our students get the right message. This again is what has been expected of us this entire semester and I’m glad to have had this experience. Over all, I had an absolute blast this semester and am looking forward to finishing it off on a good note. Thank you very much for the knowledge and the opportunity!
— Maricela Gonzalez, EDCI 4322-01, April 27, 2008

The conference turned out to be a success. Many students including myself were extremely nervous about it but deep inside of us we knew we were going to do well. Dr. Dengting's encouraging words helped tremendously.

What gave me the most confidence was that Dr. Dengting answered my e-mails so rapidly, gave me input, and corrected my mistakes on my power point. Once that was done I just had to worry of what to say in front of everyone. I will never forget this experience I have no doubt it's going to help me in the future. Oh! my favorite part was when Dr. Dengting announced to everyone that there wasn't going to be a final exam. BLESS HER HEART!!!! THANKS FOR BEING SUCH A WONDERFUL TEACHER!!!!!
—Rosario Chelf, EDCI 4322-01, April 27, 2008

The CESTL, was an experience that I will never forget. I felt so many emotions at one time, fear, nervous, and anxiety. However, it was an experience that I will not soon forget. I have done presentations in a classroom but not a public one, it was something out of the ordinary. I know I need to get out of my "comfort zone" and this was good experience. I hope no one noticed how nervous I was because I was. When my presentation was over I said to myself that was not bad at all.

Dr. Dengting I want to thank you, for your great expectations for each of us, you always want us to raise to the next level always challenging us to do our best and be the best.
—Sandra Canales, EDCI 4322-01, April 27, 2008

I loved your dance presentation that was such an art that was awesome. I could see that you are so proud of your culture. Which to me is such a beautiful culture.
—Sandra Canales, EDCI 4322-01, April 27, 2008

WOW! I was amazed at the dedication and knowledge all my peers showed on Saturday. I was actually impressed, very impressed!!! I think we all did a great job. My motivation has been down in the dumps lately and I had to push myself to do this powerpoint presentation, which I am so glad I did.

I was okay until about two presentations before mine, that is when I started to get feel nervous. I had a few questions, that I was interested in and they were answered with a presentation Dorothy, from the other class gave. It was something I had already figured out for myself and when she said it, it confirmed my own personal belief. I strongly believe that teachers are there to help reinforce what our parents should instill in us; morals, values, and respect. Parents should talk to their kids and ask them how their day was and get out your homework, let's see it. Loved your ppt Rhiannan. Our kids need to know, now more than ever, that we expect more than just the minimum. Set the bar high and let them know that it is possible to reach it, all you have to do is strive for the best.
—Valerie Green, EDCI 4322-01, April 27, 2008

I felt so confident and comfortable from beginning to end of presentation. I was very surprised that my peers were very curious and asked me several questions about my topic. I can see that the students were eager to learn about my topic. My biggest challenge for me was responding to answering the questions to my peers. I wasn’t nervous at all because it helps me and my knowledgeable experience through observations and interview with the teacher. I was satisfied with my performance, because I made all my presentation perfect, even though, with power point it needs to be edited with the background and texts.

At the end of the class, I looked up at the grades scoring evaluation paper from my peers. I felt so proud of myself because it was well done and I had work so hard. I have learned many things through this semester. I am grateful to have Dr. Boyanton for teaching us many things during her lecture class. I am ready to be confident to become a professional teacher in the future and to work with my passionate students.
— Anabel Martinez, EDCI 4322-01, May 1, 2008

I really enjoyed the conference at the “castle” Saturday. All of the presentations were very good and professional. Even though it was seven hours long, and my back was hurting, I was engaged the WHOLE time.

Preparing for the CESTL was one of the most enjoyable assignments I have ever had. Sure, it was a little stressful, especially that last week of trying to make sure I was ready for it. I rehearsed my presentation so many times with a stopwatch, but I was still so nervous that I was going to mess up on my timing. But I think that is why it was such a success.

What I liked about the assignment (and the class in general) was that Dr. Boyanton gave us a lot of autonomy. She let us choose our topic, choose our approaches and methodology, and left us to present it the way we wanted to. So many times, teachers give too many guidelines and rules about what should be done. Yet, Dr. Boyanton allowed us the freedom to do the assignment the way we wanted to. This can be a risky way to give an assignment, but the fact that she had us present our research at a conference that was open to the public, really motivated me in making sure my presentation was top-notch. I believe that is why it was such a great conference.

The conference, for me, was fun, exciting, nerve-racking, and an overall great experience. The thing I liked most about it is with all of your great ideas that you shared, I feel better prepared to be a teacher. After Saturday, I have never been so excited to walk into my own classroom for the first time! Thanks, guys, for your presentations, and thanks, Dr. Boyanton, for giving us this opportunity.
—Eldon Clark, April 27, 2008, EDCI 4322-60

Oh, how I was dreading the 26th of April! But, in the end of the day the Conference was not as bad as I thought it was going to be. I had worked very hard on getting my power point together so that I could express what I wanted in the small amount of time given.

It was good to be with my friends at the conference they made the day go by so much faster. Had we not had the bonds we made I don’t think I could of done the job I did because even though I was working the room with my eyes and gestures I was really just focusing on them because they make me comfortable. I wanted to thank you for your very warm introduction of me at the conference for a moment I felt as if I was the guest speaker…Thank YOU! I will admit that being first was a bit harder for me but on the positive side of everything I in a way set the bar of what was to be expected for the rest of the conference. I thought that my classmates did an excellent job presenting I was really impressed with how Carolina checked her shyness at the door and went up and blew the group away!!

Let me close on a positive note and that is that I enjoyed myself with my friends I learned a lot and hear some very interesting things on Saturday and to be real honest the cherry on top was your ribbon dance!! I loved it!! I thank you for showing us and giving us a taste of your culture because as you know I am fascinated by other cultures. Thank you for a wonderful experience over all at my first conference where I was a presenter.
—Ry*, April 26, 2008, EDCI 4322-60

The CESTL conference went great! Dr. Boyanton did a great job in organizing the event. Even though I did not stay for the entire conference due to work issues I was able to witness some of the presentations and they were great. Ryan’s presentation was very good and it gave a good start to the conference.

I do not know all of the names of the presenters outside our class room but the young lady who presented about the DREAM act and her personal story was compelling. I also liked the presentation from the lady who said she was from Singapore; unfortunately I cannot remember her name. There was this other lady who also spoke excellently and her synchronization with her power point presentation was extraordinary. Claudia’s presentation went very well also and I really appreciated her encouragement.

All the presentations were educational and I learned a lot from them. I wish I can someday get over my nervousness and be able to present the same way they did. I guess it is all about practice and dedication. I also read through the program and saw that Jefferson and Dr. Boyanton were performing, I really hate I missed the second part of the conference but I have already missed work too many times and I could not push it any more.
— Omar Gonzalez, April 27, 2008, EDCI 4322-60

The CESTL last Saturday afternoon was one of the most interesting and enjoyable experiences I have ever attended or been part of. The fact that many of us had never presented in front of so many people, some of which were already teachers, is a positive for us.

Now at first I was very nervous but I got over it because of the environment created by our classmates and the other students (graduate and undergraduate). I liked the experience and hopefully I can attend with consistency if there will be more of these conferences.

In the case of my presentation, I was not unsatisfied with it but I felt like I could have done better, especially in the getting my audience attention. Also, I felt confident of the research and rehearsal of my presentation but when I got up there it was a whole different ball park. I could not concentrate on what I was going to say to I turned to my sense of humor to help me with my speech. I think that since it was the first time I present in front of so many people, I was not a very effective speaker, but I will get the opportunity to do better.
-- Roberto Ramirez, April 29, 2008, EDCI 4322-60

Today I had to present my presentation on learning styles to my fellow classmates, at first I was a bit nervous but not too much, however when I arrived to class to insert my drive my presentation was not on it. I panic and then became very nervous. I ran in heals to the library to resave my presentation and then I ran back to class. My heart was racing and felt as if it was going to pop out of me. I tried to gather myself and my thoughts and began to present.

Overall I think I did okay however I know that I could have done better if that incident had not occurred. I should have doubled check to make sure the information was saved before going to class. My classmates enjoyed the presentation and commented me and told me that I did well. I was glad that they enjoyed it. I think it was a good that my classmates got to evaluate me because they gave me good feedback that I will surely take into consideration.

My experience, how can I describe it, was TERRIFYING! I think I have everything under control and then I went up there and my mind went blank. After the presentation, I felt bad because I missed out on many things that I wanted to say yet at that time I just wanted to get it over with. I just hope I can overcome this fear before I finish my classes. I tend to start to balance the positive and negative effects and how they are going to affect me in my teaching career. I come to conclusions of whether I am in the right field.

I think my main problem with speaking in front of an audience is "the audience". For example, the conference terrified me because there was going to be people there that were more educated than me and that makes me feel inferior. The classroom makes me feel more confident because we are almost on the same level of education. Even then, there are peers with such a dominant vocabulary and knowledge of information, like Rhianna and Ryan. I would not want to be in a conversation which described or influenced some one because there language is so proficient. I again am faced with that language barrier that sometimes interacts as an obstacle in getting the material across.

I also want to comment on the fact that the class was SO supportive. They were aware of my anxiety and they we encourage me not to worry and that everything was going to be ok. Then after the presentation, my stomach was in a knot and I just wanted to leave the class for some fresh air, and they all commented that I had done a good job. It made me relax a little. I wish them all the best and that continue to be just the way they are.

I am so happy to have taken this class. It had A LOT OF work but I really think I learned a lot while having fun. I loved the interaction there was and you always kept us motivated to keep on learning.
—Melody Barrera, April 28, 2008, EDCI 4322-60How did the students felt about participating and presenting at the 2nd CESTL conference? Please hear what they have to say...
-
When I look at the undergraduates and the work that they have done, I can easily believe that the extent of work they had put in must have been far and above what was required of them. They have shown me a face of Brownsville that I do not see. I think there is much hope for Brownsville, Texas for I believe they represent the cream of the crop. They are not only intelligent but also passionate that when they become teachers, they will do what is best for their students. Perhaps more than anything, they seemed to have come away, from their research, with the memory of what good teachers are like and how they too can become good future educators. When this group of young people starts their career, I believe as they become more confident of themselves, they will become movers and shakers in the field of education, or wherever they choose to be

What did I take away from CESTL beside the relief that I have one less assignment now? In the course of preparing the power point slides, I learnd that one is never too old to learn. I think when there is a curiosity and a lack of shame that anyone can be my teacher, as long as he/ she has the skill, I do not possess, I will live to be a life-long learner. Indeed, I was so impressed by some of the slides the undergraduates have that I wish I could find out how they had done it; especially the ones who added voices into the presentation.

What else have I gathered that I can use in class if I were a teacher? That element of flexibility and surprise. Dr Boyanton’s announcement at the end of the conference was a wonderful surprise. I was caught off- guard and I think the immediate sense of relief was so great that I could have danced all the way home. I think in the class after a very strenuous assignment, teachers who have the autonomy and control over their classroom practices should do just that. Then, we can sit back and watch our students dance.

I would like to add these 2 compliments to the following undergraduate presenters. I compliment:

1) Ryan for his exuberant presentation. I think the exuberance he exhibited established the tone for the conference.
2) Nilda for the personal experience that she shared. It was very poignant and showcased how immigrants , illegal or ohterwise struggle to get to where they are. I salute her hardwork and determination and wish her all the best in her future.

Dr Boyanton, please share these with them and the first part of my journal where I believe that with their passion, the undergraduates can do great things for Brownsville.

Thank you, Dr Boyanton.

I really enjoyed the CESTL project, except for the fact that I had a headache because I didn’t eat a meal within those 6 hours. For future CESTL conventions, snacks and drinks should be decided upon by students (students should cooperate to bring different food items). OTHER THAN THAT, I really liked it and wish all the students could have been there. I felt kind of awkward at times because I was at the graduate table…considering that I had just been an undergraduate a semester ago . I felt proud to be a graduate though…still do!

I liked the techniques that most people used during their presentations. I really liked when Dr. Boyanton ribbon danced ( is that how you say it?). I want her to teach me!!!-> that way I can use it as an incentive for my students whenever I have a classroom of my own. Since I will have elementary kids, I’ll say “if you behave, I”ll do the ribbon dance!” I think that would work, don’t you?
Okay so to sum up the CESTL experience, I really think it brought our class closer together because we were able to sit together and then discuss how each classmate did on their presentation. Dr. Boyanton, are we going to see what was filmed of the conference??

CESTL was quite an experience. Although most of us are already in the classroom, there was a lot of information that we heard that served as a refresher. I for one admired everyone's cooperation throughout the entire day. There was a gentleman that came up to our table and mentioned that our table was intimidating. What's funny is, we didn't feel as though we were. They must have been looking at Hector with the timer in his hand that made them nervous!! Ha! Ha! Thank you Hector for keeping us all in check!

I really enjoyed everyone's presentation. A lot of hard work and time went into the presentations. I think that everyone at the conference walked away with new information. I personally had a great time! Thank you Dr. Boyanton for showing us a little bit of China with your dance routine. Moving that material back and forth must take a lot of muscle, I admired that. Thank you also for putting the conference together and having us be a part of it.

I was amazed with all of the presentations because everybody seemed to have worked hard on it and everybody was dressed professionally. I was quite satisfied with my performance because I was not nervous because I had practiced my presentation in front of my younger brother. He came up with my opening statement and was timing me. I was so proud of myself that I was able to answer a question that an audience member gave me. He asked about why Juan behaved in a strange way and I even explained that his behavior ceased when his teacher moved the podium closer to him.

I loved Kim’s presentation because she was not reading off her slides but explains with great detail. Everybody looked like they tried their very best. I loved Carlos PowerPoint presentation with the diagrams and their explanations.

Although it was long, I spent a memorable Saturday learning about various educational topics ranging from learning strategies to high stakes testing. I would love to do this type of research conference again.

I am very glad to have participated in this conference. I was very nervous. This is the first time that I've ever been in a conference, I've attended several conferences. I enjoyed sharing my findings with everyone. I hope that they enjoyed my presentation. I practiced with one of my colleagues then I practiced at home with my family. High five to everyone! Everybody did a fantastic job!!! Tell your undergraduate class that they did a wonderful job and that I am very proud of them!!!

Mrs. Dengting thank you very much for everything you've done for us, I've learned so much. I never imagined that I was going to ever do a qualitative research and now I am so happy that I did one.
—Griselda Garcia, EDCI 6304, April 27, 2008

I would like to start off by saying "Thank you" to all! I know we had and have so much to do, but we showed respect, consideration and made the best of the time together. I was impressed with the undergraduates' work, and hope that they are as committed when they become educators. The presentation showed countless hours of work and at the end of the day I was glad I stayed until the end.

I have to admit I was very tired at the end of the presentation due to the time given and really not being able to eat a meal other than snacks. I think we would of benefited from a 20 -30 mini break to get something to eat. I think perhaps in the future the conference can start earlier and give a lunch break or just eat there. I think most of us were pressed on time and the fact that it was a Saturday it was difficult to finish a conference so late. As teachers we are used to 8:00 am – 3:00 p.m. in-services, but are ok with the idea because we still have the afternoon to be with our family.

I think if we would have started earlier I would have had time to talk to the undergraduates more. They looked like a very interesting group. I know they felt a little intimidated with us there, but I am glad we were all in the same group. I still remember Ryan coming to our table and saying “This is the table that I am worried about." Because I heard him I said “You will be fine." I am glad I was able to experience this event.

I am glad to have been a part of the CESTL this semester. The work that I put into everything (paper and ppt) was well worth it. I have a new perspective on my teaching practices as far as motivating my students. I plan on using a lot more cooperative learning next year beginning with the first week of school.

I remember being in the same shoes as the undergrads were yesterday. I was impressed with their work, and know that I would have felt the same way as they did. I was very impressed with the last presenter, Eldon Clark. He has a big future teaching Math. I can tell that by his demeanor and confidence. He will one day make a difference in a kid’s life. Please share that with him. There were quite a few of the students that will make a difference one day in a student's life. I could tell by the effort that was put into their ppt and oral presentation.

Lastly, I would like to personally thank Dr. Boyanton for her teaching. I learned a lot from taking this course. I have a new perspective on my teaching strategies and my students.
